Trivia & Secrets
Return to Monkey Island
Before and after of the Big Whoop carnival
The first appearance of the Big Whoop carnival once Boybrush and Chuckie follow their fake parents differs from the one shown when you start playing.
Chuckie washes his hands in gunk
In the outhouse, if you interact with the gunk 8 times after reading the sign, you can convince Chuckie to wash his hands in the dirty water flowing from the pipe.
All interactions with the horse armour
The horse armour is an item added to the inventory for those who pre-ordered the game. It can be used with three characters: Conrad, Stan and Elaine. Guybrush also makes distinct comments depending on his location.
Getting Captain Madison's book signed
You can borrow a book called "Ship-to-shop Combat Strategies" written by Madison in the Governor’s mansion. If you give this book to Madison, she will sign it.
Paying other characters
When the adventure begins, Guybrush starts with a coin purse. You can use this to pay for Wally's maps and Locke's keys, even if not required. Additionally, you can also offer money to other characters for funny reactions.
Pineapple person in the forest
There is a Pineapple person hidden in the Mêlée Island forest. His appearance is random, and he shows up while you explore the forest maze, after you get the map and before you find the mop tree. The Pineapple person will flee once the mouse is over him.
Four ways to make a mop
One of the tasks in Part I is to create a mop to be able to join LeChuck's crew. The mop consists of a mop handle and a mop head. For the mop head, you can use four objects: a sponge, a tangled string, a shrunken head and a stuffed animal.
Mêlée Island poster gets updated
The Mêlée Island docks poster gets updated after Guybrush destroys the historic mop tree. The first time Guybrush reads it, it promotes Carla's re-election. However, after Guybrush's crime, it becomes a wanted poster for the mop tree criminal.
Stealing the cook's picture
There is a picture in the Scumm Bar kitchen that you can steal. This can only be done after you give the cooking book to the cook. During Part IV, you can also use it with the frame.
"Ask me about Loom" extended dialogue
If you press the escape key during Cobb's Loom sales pitch, he will say an extended dialogue instead of skipping it. This is exactly the same behaviour as in The Secret of Monkey Island.
Guybrush drowns
While underwater, Guybrush can hold his breath for 8 minutes. However, once the time passes, it's extended 6 minutes further and then again 4 minutes. After the last time extension, Guybrush dies.
Guybrush jumps on the cliff edge
Guybrush will jump on the cliff edge on the Monkey Island mountaintop if you click on it four times. This is a reference to The Secret of Monkey Island, where Guybrush falls from the cliff but is saved by a rubber tree.
Putra cooks brains for Guybrush
You can get Putra to cook brains for Guybrush while he is disguised as Gullet during Part III. You can even force Guybrush to try them.
Leaving Monkey Island with all the skulls
You can choose to leave Monkey Island with or without skulls, including Murray. You get some extra interactions during Part IV if you get all the skeleton heads and Murray right before Guybrush builds the Sea Monkey II.
Five places to pick up firewood
There're five places during Part IV where you can pick up firewood. Each island has at least one: Mêlée Island lookout point, Scurvy Island camp, Terror Island mysterious clearing, Brrr Muda town hall and ice castle.
Lumpsucker escapes fish shop
During Part IV, the lumpsucker on the floor moves closer to the door every time you enter the shop. The lumpsucker manages to escape after entering and leaving the shop 31 times.
Getting a commemorative Chums trophy
When playing in casual mode, the Chums puzzle isn't necessary to progress in the game. However, it's possible to play it. Once completed, you'll receive a commemorative trophy from the old pirated leaders.
Pirates from the Monkey Island 1 cover
On Terror Island, you find three dead pirates. Guybrush mentions that they look familiar. These are the pirates from the Monkey Island 1 cover. Ron Gilbert twitted that the MI1 cover pirates would appear in Return to Monkey Island.
Guybrush explores Cogg Island
It's possible to visit an underwater area called Cogg Island during Part IV. You have to get the randomised coordinates from the trivia card that asks you for the island location. After you get it, you must dive into the waters using the provided coordinates on the map.
Neil Druckmann cameo
Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, is a well-known Monkey Island fan. He even included a Monkey Island easter egg in Naughty Dog’s game Uncharted 4. Druckmann made a cameo in Return to Monkey Island by voicing a Brrr Muda Ice Quarry prisoner.
Freeing Wally at the end
In the last part, Guybrush encounters Wally hanging above the lava. To free Wally, use the monocle on the shackles during Part II or III. They are near the empty supplies at the front of LeShip. Before Part V, give the serial number note to Locke Smith to get the key.
Taking a picture with the pirate cut-out
Guybrush can take a picture with the pirate cut-out at the end and show it to Elaine. Move Guybrush behind the cut-out, and a photograph will automatically appear in the inventory. You can also use the picture with the frame you got on Scurvy Island.
All endings and post-credit scenes
The game has ten different endings and post-credit scenes decided by a few choices you make. You can leave with Elaine or go back. You can also choose to get the secret, just the key or none before you leave. Lastly, you may also answer Boybrush differently to get a different ending.
